Plague or Carre disease (Distemper) is an acute viral disease. A living organism becomes infected through organs and the gastrointestinal tract. From diseased animals, the virus enters the environment with feces, saliva and skin particles, so a healthy dog risks becoming infected from any object that the sick person has come into contact with. So, a person can bring a virus from the street on the soles of shoes.
To prevent this, you should know how the plague appears in dogs, and take care of preventive measures in advance.
Signs of dog plague
The carnivore plague virus belongs to the order Mononegavirales and from 3 days to 3 weeks may not manifest itself in any way. Therefore, at the initial stage it is very difficult to diagnose an ailment. And during this period, the dog poses a danger to healthy pets. After some time, the following symptoms of the plague appear:
depression of consciousness, fatigue;
the coat stands on end;
loss of appetite or partial refusal of food;
decreased interest in games and work;
redness of the mucous membranes;
fear of light;
discharge from the nasal cavity and eyes;
inflammation on the skin in the form of a rash;
diarrhea and vomiting;
cough;
temperature increase up to 39.4-40 ° C (it can hold the first days, and then decrease);
disorders of the nervous system: convulsions, tics, epilepsy.
How to treat plague in dogs
If you find at least some symptoms, immediately contact a veterinary clinic. The disease has several forms (depending on the affected organ), for the determination of which it is necessary to conduct laboratory diagnosis. According to its results, the doctor will prescribe the most effective treatment.
There are no special medicines for the plague, so complex therapy is usually carried out, aimed primarily at strengthening the immune system. In no case do not self-medicate and do not solder the animal with vodka!
In order not to infect healthy pets, the patient is isolated from animals susceptible to the virus: all domestic and wild representatives of the canine and marten families. It is noteworthy that cats are not afraid of this infection. Keep in mind that the virus can also be released a couple of weeks after recovery. In addition, it survives at low temperatures (approximately to -25 ° C).
Keep a sick pet in a warm and dry room with dim lighting. Wipe off the mucus that is released regularly and treat the skin sores with an antiseptic. Feed your pet liquid food that is high in nutrients. Soups with small pieces of meat, cottage cheese, porridge are suitable.
Vaccines against carnivore plague
A vaccine against a dog plague will help to avoid infection. Sick little puppies rarely survive, therefore they are vaccinated already at the age of 1.5-2 months. But if the pet survives, it will retain immunity for life. However, unfortunately, the likelihood of developing complications on vital organs is high.
Puppies are vaccinated in 2 stages, the first time they use the Puppy DP vaccine, and after 3-5 weeks the vaccination is repeated using DHPPi. Adult animals are vaccinated once a year. Depending on the drug, breed and individual characteristics of the body, the scheme may vary.
Take plague prophylaxis seriously and don’t forget to revaccinate each year. Then your four-legged friend will be protected from this serious misfortune and will certainly thank with selfless love and affection.
