"Germans" have long gained fame in all corners of the world. These universal pets have long gained a lot of fans, but it’s not so easy for beginners to find a healthy (both physically and mentally) representative. Since, as you know, popularity always spoils the breed. We tell you how to choose a wonderful German shepherd and not lose.
How to make a deliberate choice of a German shepherd
The first thing you need to do is to find a competent breeder who does not chase a big jackpot, but is a fan of the breed and seeks to improve it. Choose a German Shepherd dog not blindly, but based on the reviews and recommendations of knowledgeable people. Feel free to ask questions on forums, specialized pedigree sites and communities on social networks.
At the second stage, you need to determine the purpose and clearly answer your question: why do I want to get a shepherd puppy? Just for lying on the couch and periodic active walks in the park or forest, some dogs are suitable, and for the service (for example, security at home), exhibitions or sports - completely different. Based on this, choose a suitable nursery and line in the pedigree. For service, consider a shepherd only working breeding.
If you have the opportunity to independently come for the baby, carefully inspect it. A healthy puppy should be quite active (but not too much) and cheerful. In addition, it should be different:
good appetite;
clean ears, eyes and nostrils;
clean and neat coat;
a complete set of milk teeth and a scissor bite;
confident movements without signs of lameness.
If you have to choose a four-legged friend from photographs, ask the breeder to send some puppy videos shot at different times and in different circumstances. This will give you a clearer idea of who you are taking.
Common flaws of modern German shepherd dogs
Since the frenzied popularity (including thanks to well-known films and series) spoiled the breed, today you need to carefully choose a puppy. Often in the exterior there are the following disadvantages of German shepherds:
Diseases of the limbs. Incorrect positioning, poorly expressed limb angles, weak ligaments and dysplasia are the weakest points of modern dogs. Choose a baby from parents who have documents confirming the absence of these defects. And also look at the movements of your future pet;
Weak back. Many “Germans” have a long lower back, short, horizontal or too oblique croup.
Square shape - if the height at the withers is equal to the oblique length of the body.
All these disadvantages can lead to serious physical ailments. And you can forget about the exhibition career.
Often the psyche suffers (a weak nervous system occurs). Therefore, choose a bold (without pronounced, for example, noise phobias) puppy. Try clapping his hands next to him and look at the reaction. If the dog has not run away from you and has not hid in a corner, then everything is fine. This means that he passed your test.
In addition, the dog must be friendly to people and relatives. If the baby bites your hands and feet, then this does not mean that he is angry. This is just a sign of playfulness. If a favorite from early childhood tries to interact with a person, then an intelligent dog will surely grow out of him. The main thing is not to make mistakes in leaving and play correctly with him.
