A similar rating is often published by Canadian scientists, but we slightly adjusted it based on experience with different dogs.
Please note that the definition of “smart dog” is often applied to breeds that are highly human oriented and easily trained. These animals are ready to work with the owner and carry out his commands at any time of the day. Therefore, you will not find Siberian husky, akita inu, etc. on this list. But we in no way want to say that these wonderful dogs are stupid.
Border collie
This is not the first year this shepherd dog has confidently occupied the first line in the top 10 most intelligent breeds of dogs, which were made by Canadian scientists from the University of British Columbia. Border Collie is a fast, strong, hardy and easily trained dog, but it requires great physical and mental stress. The breed was bred specifically for grazing, but is now widely used in cynological sports (frisbee, agility), search and rescue service.
Pudel
All poodles (from large to dwarf) readily work with a person, they learn tricks with excitement, so they often perform in a circus. Today, the breed is better known as decorative, although earlier poodles were used for hunting game, as well as in search and rescue and customs services.
German shepherd
This popular breed needs no introduction. She is widely known for films and series about service dogs, which help to catch criminals, look for drugs and explosives, save people. Therefore, no one doubts that the “Germans” deservedly enter the top three in the ranking of the most intelligent and devoted breeds, because they clearly demonstrate their intellectual abilities.
Retriever
Many are familiar with the Golden (Golden) Retriever and Labrador Retriever, however there are several more varieties, representatives of which also differ in beauty, intelligence and ingenuity. For example, Flat Coated (Flat) Retriever, Nova Scotia (Toller) Retriever, Chesapeake Bay Retriever. All of them are great companions for an active person. Although the retriever was originally born for hunting to hunt, today they serve well in customs and law enforcement agencies and help people as canine therapists and guide dogs.
Sheltie
This dog is similar to a longhair collie only smaller. She was bred in the UK for grazing sheep, and today it is not only a smart shepherd, but also a good companion for a person who leads an active lifestyle. Sheltie successfully competes in dog-frisbee and agility competitions.
Belgian Shepherd
Depending on the type and shade of wool, 4 varieties are distinguished:
malinois - short-haired, now the most popular;
groenendael - longhair, black color;
laekenois - wire-haired, the rarest;
tervuren - similar to malinois, but with long hair.
All of them are distinguished by a developed intellect, good memory, easy learning and mainly choleric temperament. Like all shepherd dogs, the “Belgians” were originally shepherds, but now they can often be found in the police service and in dog training.
Rottweiler
This powerful and hardy dog is well trained and is aggressive towards strangers and animals only with the wrong education. Under the guidance of a competent dog handler, an excellent service dog and security guard grows out of a Rottweiler puppy.
Australian Shepherd, Aussie
She was bred in the USA in the XX century. Aussi is a smart, active and friendly pet. His relatives are smart shepherds and collies, so thanks to the genes, the dog is also human-oriented and is an excellent shepherd and athlete.
Dobermann
This short-haired dog with a predominantly strong and balanced temperament is currently less popular than several decades ago. But he still lends himself well to training and bewitches with his stately appearance.
Welsh corgi
It has two varieties:
Pembroke (with short paws, a "fox" muzzle and bright golden hair);
cardigan (with longer legs and wide breasts).
These low shepherd dogs from Wales are gaining popularity today due to their attractive appearance. It is impossible not to fall in love with a smiling face of a corgi. However, this dog is not only beautiful, but also smart. After all, every owner of a welsh corgi knows that his pet is a miniature shepherd.
If you did not find your dog's breed on this list, do not be discouraged. All pets can be trained. It’s just that you need to work with some of them longer than with the above. Be patient, regularly exercise, do not stop there and surround your pet with care and affection. Then you will be able to independently grow the smartest dog in the world!
