Breed history

As already mentioned in the introduction to the article, the Abyssinian is the ancestor of Somalia. It wasn’t possible to establish for certain what period of time and for what reason they began to have long hair, but it was she who became the key link in the creation of a new breed.

The breeder named Janet Robertson became a central figure in the history of the breed. It was established that in the 40s of the last century, Abyssinok was actively exported to the United States, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. It was there at this time that the first representatives of the long-haired Abyssinian cat began to appear.

The reaction to them was completely negative. Breeders did not allow them to breeding, culled and tried in every way to eradicate the gene "long-haired." However, the hard work of breeder Mary Meiling led to the fact that the Somali cat breed was officially recognized in 1982.

Description of the Somali cat

Representatives of this breed are synonymous with the words grace, luxury, nobility. These pets - owners of the body of medium parameters with well-developed muscles. The stretched body is located on strong, strong, but soft limbs that create a feeling of strength and dexterity of the animal.

The breed’s pride is a richly fur-covered tail. It is thick at the base and tapering to the tip, of medium length.

The head has the shape of a soft wedge. There are no signs of angularity, rudeness. In appearance, it resembles a fox due to the wide and large ears (preferably with tassels) and the almond-shaped eyes of rich green or amber colors with peculiar strokes coming from them towards the ears.

Coat - the central element of the description of the Somali cat. The priority is density, softness and color saturation. The cover consists of two layers, has a gentle and silky hair. It is desirable to have a collar and pants.

Cat colors

For this breed, there are several types of classic colors and several more modern ones that have arisen under the influence of fashion.

The traditional colors of the Somali cat are wild and ticked. The latter is characterized by hair, which has several shades of color: at the root it is lighter and darker towards the tip. The wild color is represented by red-red hair with the obligatory presence of a dark stripe running along the spine, dark hair between the toes of the paws and around the nose.

This breed has a very positive and friendly disposition. They are calm, gentle, tactful, but at the same time playful and extremely active. In the character of the Somali cat there is such a feature as unlimited attachment to a person - they absolutely do not tolerate loneliness.

Pet content

A Somali cat is not whimsical in its care, but of course there are a number of rules. First of all, fluffy need to equip a warm, bright, spacious room, which will be cozy and comfortable. Stable air temperature is obligatory, because of the fragile health of the cat can easily catch a cold.

Care for wool will not deliver labor even to a beginner. It is enough to wash it several times a year with a special shampoo and regularly comb it. By the way, many recommend including carrots in the pet's diet to give the wool a rich golden color.

Be sure to stock up on various toys and fun for the content of the Somali cat. The ideal option would be a full-fledged gaming complex in which she can show all her activity.

Cat food

Food should consist of natural meat, dairy products, cereals. It contains all the necessary nutrients for the health and energy of the animal. It is forbidden to give food from the human table: pastries, sweets, food with an abundance of spices, fatty meat, sausages, smoked meats, etc.
