The origin of the toyger cat

The breed was bred in America by the breeder Judy Sugden. The girl intentionally tried to get a striped pet, the color resembling a tiger. Work has been done since the 1980s. The Bengal cat (bengal) and the domestic short-haired cat with a striped fur coat became the parents of the toyger.

Toyger cat was recognized by the TICA association in 2007, and the World Federation (WCF) - only in 2009. Until that time, Judy conducted a thorough selection, until she achieved the desired colors.

Toyger breed description

These large representatives of the cat family have a wide bones, a long body covered with muscles, a strong neck and a broad chest. Breeders say that muscles are even on the nose. Paws are strong, fingers are long. The tail is long and strong. Due to the stately appearance, these pets resemble their wild relatives. The body weight of females is 3-5 kg, while males are 5-9 kg.

The head is long and wide, the muzzle is shaped like a heart, the ears are rounded at the ends, the eyes are small and deep-set, have a rounded shape and a bright greenish tint. On closer examination, you can see barely hanging eyelids. The nose is slightly rounded.

A special place in the description of the Toyger breed is a shiny fur coat. On the body, the hair is predominantly short, but in the place of a dark pattern, the hairs are a little longer, this creates a relief. On temples and cheeks the coat is also longer. To the touch the fur coat is similar to plush.

Dark (black or all shades of brown) stripes - the so-called color tabby - should be placed all over the body on a lighter background. At the same time on the body the location of the bands should be exclusively vertical.

On the neck, paws and tail, they are closed into rings. Spots are allowed, but they cannot dominate. The paw pads and the tip of the tail are black. The coat around the eyes is lighter than on other parts of the body.

Features of the content of the toyger

Toyger is soft and friendly. These pets are very sociable, get along well with children and various animals (with the exception of rodents and birds), they are not very active, although they would like to play with humans. Representatives of the breed are not very talkative and unobtrusive, they do not miss much alone. Like many cats, in whose veins the blood of wild predators flows, they love to splash in the water.

In general, these animals are healthy, but sometimes diseases such as:

hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) - thickening of the ventricular wall (usually left);

infectious peritonitis, or FIP (Feline infection peritonitis coronavirus) is a dangerous viral disease caused by coronaviruses. Toyger kittens are vaccinated against this disease at the age of 4 months, after 3 weeks the vaccine is repeated, and then it is given annually.

In the house, small tigers are not very active, therefore they tend to be overweight. To avoid the appearance of excess weight, it is necessary to closely monitor the diet. A day is enough two meals. Pets are given industrial food super premium class or natural meat and offal, chicken, eggs, some vegetables and cereals. Fish is not recommended.

The rest of the contents of the toyger is no different from other cats. Mandatory weekly grooming procedures (cleaning the ears, eyes, teeth), cutting the claws, if they do not grind off the claw. Wool does not require special care, but it will not be superfluous to periodically comb it with a brush with natural bristles.
